In order to have a good set of clean and healthy teeth and general good oral health, you don’t need to be a dental professional. You just need to ensure that you do some basic day to day actions to ensure that your teeth and your mouth remain clean. If you however feel that you want to have a career or a job in the dental industry, you can find out what you need to do from DDS connections.

Below are some of the more important steps towards good oral and dental hygiene. The steps highlighted below should be done at least two times a day including, just before going to sleep in the evening and after you wake up. If you can also afford the time to clean your teeth after lunch, you should do so.

  1. Floss your teeth

Flossing your teeth is important in order to get the pieces of food that get stuck between the teeth. Some types of dental floss are laced with compounds to help get rid of bacteria. Ensure that you thoroughly go through all the spaces between the teeth and especially to the area where the teeth meet the gums.

  1. Clean your tongue

Most people neglect cleaning the tongue, yet it can hold a lot of bacteria that can cause harm to your teeth. The mucous layer on the tongue protects the bacteria in the mouth and therefore needs to be regularly removed. Don’t scrape your tongue too hard in order to avoid any bleeding.

As you scrape the tongue, ensure that you rinse both your mouth and the tongue scraper after a few strokes of cleaning the tongue. Use toothpaste with the tongue scraper. Scrape from the back of the tongue to the front.

  1. Brush your teeth

After you have cleaned your tongue, it is important to brush your teeth using an adequate amount of toothpaste for about 3 minutes. As you brush your teeth, it is also quite crucial that you brush your gums, and cheeks as well. If you can use some warm water to brush your teeth, it may make for a more comfortable and thorough job of ensuring your oral hygiene.

  1. Rinse your mouth with oral rinse

While you still have the toothpaste in your mouth or after you spit out most of it, you can use an oral rinse to wash out your mouth. Swish the oral rinse around your mouth and spit out all the contents in your mouth.

In order to rinse your mouth effectively, use the mouth rinse according to instructions on the label. However, using about two caps of the mouth rinse and swishing it in your mouth for about one and a half minutes should do the job. Spit it out and repeat the mouth rinse process again ensuring that this time you swish it, as far back in your mouth as possible.

After using the oral rinse, don’t eat or drink anything for about 30 minutes so as to let the toothpaste and oral rinse to have enough time to work on your mouth.
