CBD AS A SLEEPING AGENT

While there are links to CBD and tiredness, most of the benefits that CBD offers to those who have sleeping problems involve remedying the causes of their sleeping problems: pain and anxiety.

For instance, pain is highly correlated with loss of sleep and general sleeping disorders. Patients with chronic pain tend to also cite a loss of sleep and loss of sleep results in additional pain creating a cyclical trend. This is where CBD oils and other supplements can be beneficial.

THE SCIENCE

According to a report on rats published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, the administration of CBD oils not only increases total sleep time, resulting in a better sleep, but also increases sleep latency after administration.

In addition to better sleep, CBD is often used to also help treat parasomnias like REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) which is a syndrome that affects the nervous system of people during sleep and leads to debilitating nightmares. In a 2014 study, CBD was found to substantially reduce symptoms of RBD with no side effects. Further studies of quality are needed, but this data strongly suggests that CBD can control the effects of parasomnias and lead to a better night’s sleep.

CBD also has anxiolytic properties, which can be helpful in reducing sleep difficulties and improving overall sleep quality. These results are entirely dependent on dosage as smaller doses of CBD reduces daytime sleepiness, which leads to an increase inmorning performance. Effectively, the general sleep-wake cycle of people who use CBD is improved.

MELATONIN AND CBD

To further increase their sleep quality, some people even utilize a mixture of melatonin and CBD known as Power Sleep. The idea is that these two agents working in unison can help a person maintain a healthy sleep cycle. With the anxiolytic and antidepressant properties of CBD, relaxation comes much sooner and more assuredly allowing for the melatonin to set in and lull consumers into a sleep that is maintained as the naturally occurring hormone takes effect.

To understand why, it’s important to dive into what melatonin is. Melatonin is a hormone in the human body produced by the pineal gland. In fact, the production of Melatonin is the pineal gland’s primary function. As a hormone, Melatonin regulates wakefulness and sleep by way of ensuring circadian entrainment (24-hour synchronized “schedule” for the body) in humans and other mammals of similar composition.

The drug form of melatonin is used to adjust the body’s circadian rhythm by increasing the concentration of the hormone in the body to induce sleep. Much like CBD, this is often used to treat people with insomnia and other parasomnias.

It’s easy to see why combining these two consumables would be beneficial for those wanting to increase the quality of their sleep and, by proxy, their next-day performance and productivity.

OPTIONS

Having a healthy, consistent sleep-wake cycle is important to productivity and energy levels. For this reason, maintaining a good sleep-wake cycle has become a hot commodity for consumers and patients alike. Many products utilize this kind of relaxation, circadian rhythm combination method. CBD infused water and other types of salves for sleep are great options. The reduction in anxiety allows for the subsequent relaxation of the body’s muscle activity leading to a more healthy life.
