Four Types of Arthritis: Dr. Louis Keppler & Associates: Orthopedic Surgery

Arthritis is a medical term for pain in the joints that results from inflammation. There are many different conditions to which the term may refer, each with different causes. Here are some types of arthritis that are relatively common.

1. Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder. Sometimes, for reasons that are not entirely known, the immune system that protects the body from disease and infection starts attacking normal tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system attacks the cartilage between the joints. This can cause stiffness that starts in the morning and lasts all day as well as multiple joints that are painful and swollen in a symmetrical pattern. Early intervention can prevent the disease from progressing further.

2. Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is usually what people are referring to when they use the term “arthritis.” The cartilage that cushions the joints can break down over time. For this reason, arthritis is also known as degenerative joint disease. Certain factors can advance the degenerative process, such as extra pressure on the joints from being overweight. Osteoarthritis may affect either side or both. Arthritis pain services Jersey City NJ may be able to provide relief.

3. Psoriatic Arthritis

Like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis is caused by an autoimmune condition. In this case, the immune system also attacks the skin. This results in a condition called psoriasis that causes itching and the formation of scaly lesions.

Approximately one-tenth to one-third of people with psoriasis also have joint pain with it. In other words, it is possible to have psoriasis without arthritis, but the reverse is not true of psoriatic arthritis.

4. Gout

Gout occurs because of a buildup of uric acid in the joints, especially in the feet. This can happen because there is too much uric acid in the body or the kidneys aren’t functioning adequately to remove it. The uric acid forms crystals that cause sharp, stabbing pain.

There are many treatment options available for different types of arthritis.
